Michael A. Sainz, M.A., LPCC
Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” –John 14:6
Why a Career in Counseling:
Both Michael and his wife were born in Tucson, Arizona. Although raised in different denominations, both had a strong background in the church yet never developed the “relationship” that everyone talked about and the importance of spending time with the Lord. He and his wife invited God to their wedding but not to the marriage. Together, they made every mistake a couple could make. They followed the world’s view of marriage and success.
After moving to Colorado in 2005, their struggle culminated with the ultimate choice: submit to God and learn what He had to say about marriage and family or throw it all away and start over. Fortunately, God got a hold of Michael’s heart and put him on a new path – a better path – with His Son, Jesus Christ.
Michael was accepted to Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado. During his tenure he studied Theology and the integration of counseling theories in the pursuit of counseling couples who are struggling. He graduated with a degree in both Counseling Ministries (2013) and Mental Health Counseling (2016).
Additionally, Michael has a passion for adolescents. He spent six years working with youth outside of Boston, Massachusetts where he lived with and counseled kids from the ages of 7 to 15. It was that experience that led him to a career in Education. He taught High School Literature and was honored with “Teacher of the Year” award his first year of teaching. He has continued to work with adolescents in some capacity, even volunteering at his own children’s Middle School as part of the Jefferson County Public School System Watch D.O.G.S. program.
Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach:
Michael’s approach to counseling is to teach and equip couples to navigate the challenges of marriage in today’s world using sound biblical principles according to God’s Word. Applying these doctrines, Michael strives to share the importance of a covenant marriage and foster hope and healing to couples and encourage healthy, loving and lasting relationships. He also encourages individuals and adolescents to focus on personal accountability and different methodology to accomplish personal growth. He believes that people have within themselves the ability to change and grow. Working in partnership with his clients, Michael believes that decided-upon goals can be achieved in a timely manner. Michael also believes that focusing on the present and future is advantageous to meeting goals, but that reflecting on the past is often necessary to identify troubling areas in our lives. The healing process is a collaborative process and Michael is always focused on the client and the client’s needs.
Personal Life and Interest:
Michael and his wife have been married since 1998 and live in Morrison, Colorado with their two children now 12 and 14. Michael and his wife continue grow in their faith and love toward each other and their children. They both love to share their story to inspire hope and healing in marriages.
Michael is an avid cyclist and has competed in short and ultra endurance races since he was 14 years old. Although he has competed in both mountain and road races, Michael is a “roady” at heart. Just in the last 10 years have the races become a family event. Michael is currently training for the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3000 mile race from San Diego CA. to Annapolis MD. He hopes to compete in 2017. Michael is also an avid racquetball player and currently holds a white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
